Haunt, Heyday, Hindsight

Haunt：お化けが出没する；考えが心に浮かぶ；よく訪れる；しょっちゅうつき合う；悩ます。   The old temple is said to be haunted. Memories of love haunted me. Mike haunted the galleries and bars that the artists went to.  Mary haunted famous men, hoping to gain celebrity for herself. My youthful escapades came back to haunt me.

Heyday：盛り、全盛期。

　　The 1940s were the heyday for the chemists and chemical engineers.

Hindsight：後知恵。

　　It is easier to have hindsight than foresight (ゲスの後知恵).

　

Nettle, Nonchalant, Numinous

Nettle：いらいらさせる。

　　I was nettled by her persistence.

Nonchalant：無頓着、冷淡な。

　　Assume a nonchalant pose. They were nonchalant about the whole things.

Numinous：不可解な、神秘的な。

　　That element in artistic expression which remains numinous.

yen, yield, yoke

Yen：熱望、あこがれ。

    Mike had a yen for Mary.

Yield：生じる；放棄する；与える。

    The land yields good crops. Mary has a trust fund which yields four percent interest annually. They yielded the fort to the enemy.

Yoke：（牛などを）くびきにかける；一緒にする。

    The forthcoming marriage of Mike and Mary will yoke the two royal families.

vantage, vestige, vindicate

Vantage：有利、有利な立場。

　　You had me at vantage (私より有利). Vantage point (見晴らしのきく地点).

Vestige：遺物。

　　Scientists say the appendix is a vestige of the days when humans used to eat more roughage (栄養価の少ないかさの多い食物).

Vindicate：汚名をはらす；正当化する；擁護する；要求する。

　　The verdict of innocence vindicated me. Subsequent events vindicated my policy. We must vindicate our liberty. No one can vindicate to himself the right to take another's life.

Quack：いかさま医者、ニセ医者。

    Notorious cancer-cure quacks of the day. Distinguish the expert from the quack.

Querulous（クウェルラス）：不平満々の、愚痴っぽい。

    The querulous victims of the organizations. Constant querulous reminders of things to be done.

Quotidian：毎日の（daily）。

    Quotidian report (日報).

Taciturn：寡黙な、無口な。

    In the face of adversity, the normally outspoken journalist became taciturn.

Torturous：曲がりくねった（winding）；回りくどい；（議論が）不正な。

    The course of the river was tortuous. Dubious and torturous arguments are posed to try to prove that a copied human gene is not a discovery. A tortuous criticism.

Tribulation：苦難。

    Life is uncertain and full of tribulation.

Haggle：口うるさく値切る；論争、いがみ合う。

    They spent hours haggling over the price of fish. The senators haggled

Harry：悩ませる、苦しめる；荒廃させる。

    The urban inhabitants are harried by ear-splitting noises. The troops harried the countryside.

Horde：大集団、大群。

    Hordes of urchins ran around half naked.

Anoint：塗り付ける。

Abeyance：遅滞、停止中。

    I am a literary aspirant (文学志望者).

Unbridle：拘束から外す、自由にする。

   Unbridled rage. Unbridled greed.

Ulterior：（目的、動機などが）かくされた；かけ離れた。

    They had an ulterior object in view. Your suggestion is ulterior to the purposes of the present discussion.

Uptake：理解、了解。

     Quick on the uptake (理解が早い).

Celerity：機敏、素早さ。

Congruent：適合する、一致する。

　　Their hypothesis is congruent with the results of our experiments.
